Apologies to all that I’m a little behind with my week 5 update – I’m currently travelling, and will have my week 6 post up on Friday, so nearly two for one!
The end of semester means it’s time to focus on the final stretch. The routines are under threat as everyone works solidly on getting papers finished and grades together. In years gone past I have suffered the final week of semester armed with a pack of Tim Tams, or chips and dips, munching away while writing. Of course, when I do that I’m eating for no reason other than stress and I’m not even paying attention to the food at all.
It gets so that you believe you can’t write unless you actually have that whole setup going. No Tim Tams? No writing.
So instead of Tim Tams, this semester I had a big last paper to write, so I did a few things to help get through it and stay focused on both my work and my food intake:
1. I basically moved in to the library. Yep, the grungy library part with all the undergrads, away from the cafe. I got a nice little individual nook and ‘camped’. When you change your location, you can’t help but change your routine. And there are other benefits – knowing I’d moved to the library to just work meant that’s exactly what I did. I was there to work, and I slogged away for about 24 hours across the weekend.
2. I took in with my all my Nutrisystem for the day, as well as my add-ins (fruits, yoghurts, salads). Of course, I had my big bottle of water and it was the thing I slurped on absent-mindedly as I wrote (instead of Tim Tams – yep, that was easy). I’m glad I chose a cubicle very close to the bathroom! 🙂
3. When I went home each day, it was to my dinner and exhaustion – not more work. That meant that I was able to say to myself every day I couldn’t just do it when I got home. Instead, I focused on working solidly while in the library.
I survived. My work all got done (although I was totally knackered by the end of it), and I stayed on track really well. I was very pleased to get on the scales and find out that I lost another 3.5 pounds! That takes me over the 10 pound mark altogether, and I couldn’t be happier. I can absolutely tell the difference! (Oh, and that paper? I got an A, so obviously grades aren’t tied to Tim Tams.)
