Week 7: My new BFF

I have a new friend. He comes everywhere with me. I think this is going to turn into something long term.

When you lose your first 10 pounds with Nutrisystem, you are sent a little bear. His name is Pound. Anyone who knows me well, knows I have a penchant for teddy bears – in fact I have a business idea for when I retire that involves teddy bears and chocolate (yep, I even have a startup idea for retirement). So while my teddy bear collection remains in storage in Australia, Pound is a very, very welcome addition to my lifestyle in America.

He comes everywhere with me. And I take pictures of him. Jed would say this is because I have no shame and am prone to doing ‘stupid’ things. I say it’s because I like to create narratives. (What does Jed know, anyway? He’s so uncreative.) So I thought I’d share with you some of Pound and my adventures this week.

He comes shopping – he even has shopping tips!

– Begin with a list, and stick with it (actually take it out and cross things off). If pen and paper are unmanageable, then use your smart phone if you have one. A very convenient way of being sure you’re buying what you intended.

– Keep to the outer edges of the store. Most days, you should be able to buy everything you need in those areas – the fresh produce section, dairy counter, bakery. That’s it. Keep away from the high processed stuff unless you’ve specifically put it on the list.

– Make friends with the people who work in the fresh food sections of the store, and ask them for recommendations of new things to try. The old days of being friendly with the butcher, for example, seem to have passed us by – but their expertise has not! They might recommend to you a new cut of meat, a new fruit to try, or a new recipe that could be just what you’re looking for!

Obviously having Pound join me has spurred me on. I lost another 3.6 pounds! (Yep, I couldn’t believe that – I weighed myself twice to be sure!) That takes me to a total loss of 15.2 pounds since I began seven short weeks ago. At this rate, I’ll be heading quickly towards my second bear for losing 20 pounds (but don’t tell Pound, he might get jealous).

Week One -4.6 pounds

  • This is a brilliant piece of advice — new to me but a big DUH:

  • Thanks guys! I love all your support 🙂 It’s fantastic to actually be finding clothes in my wardrobe that fit again, when I was sure I’d never wear them again. 🙂
