I didn’t get eaten by a mountain lion on the trail because it was at my kid’s school instead
The first time I got an email from Charlie’s school telling me that there had been a mountain lion sighting, and the kids were being made to go home in pairs or have a parent collect them, I thought it was a joke.
But I was assured it wasn’t, so I had a heart attack, and made sure I went to school to pick up the kids – all the while looking around wildly for the impending attacking...

Living in a small town means knowing how to work the liquor stores
So with Halloween upon us (well, it’s October), it became apparent that yet again the dry weather in Boulder had evaporated some of the wine in the fridge. Ahem.
But I’ve been concerned about replenishing my bottle of white. I always go to the same store, and the people in there recognise me. I was kind of flattered because the same guy kept carding me, and you know what that’s all...

The serenity and beauty of snow
Even if you’re not Australian, you should see The Castle. A fantastic Aussie film that captures all that is true and good about being an Australian family.
Walking to class at CU, Boulder
Now I’m in the US, I still say catchphrases from this film, even in different settings. Here, the Trading Post is turned into Craigslist. The muttering under my breath when someone’s listed something...
I really wasn’t dumpster diving, officer
A few months after we moved to Boulder, I was informed by sage, experienced people of the wonders of dumpster diving at the end of Spring semester. When all the students go back to their moms and dads for the summer. I heard fanciful stories that instead of giving stuff away or selling it, students just put all their things in the dumpsters, including unused detergent, soap, lightbulbs, etc.
At first...
See student-focused New Venture Challenge startup finals at CU this Friday
It has been my absolute privilege to be on the Executive Committee of the CU New Venture Challenge (CUNVC) for 2010.
The CUNVC is focused on providing entrepreneurial support, mentoring and cross-campus collaboration for startups that include students and faculty, across the University of Colorado.
The goal is to provide some real support and eliminate some of the smoke and mirrors involved in really...
How to make a quick family video with Windows Movie Maker
When Max leaped across from Sydney to join us for three weeks in January, we took lots of pictures. As mums do.
I promised myself I’d get them organised, and create a nice montage. As mums do.
Now we’re halfway through February, and the planned montage didn’t happen because other things got in the way. As they do.
Max enjoying the view.
I decided I was being too much of a perfectionist....
Islam and the media – without media.
The Islam and the Media conference, held by the Center for Media, Religion and Culture at the University of Colorado at Boulder (January 7-10) was a huge success in bringing together leaders in thought and practise on religion and media. But you wouldn’t know it if you’d been watching mainstream media.
At a time in our history that international front pages and lead stories are obsessively...
Skiing on a budget with kids in Colorado
If you’re looking for a great deal for skiing, then a little preparation is in order. Think it out early, and you’ll save lots. Leave it to the last minute, and you’ll be paying for it – literally. As a grad student mum with extremely limited funds, I have got hold of some great deals, and I wanted to share some resources with you.
The Colorado Gems Card. For a $10 initial...

Thank you bus girl, happy holidays
Sometimes something in your daily routine can remind you of how connected we can be.
This semester I’ve caught the bus to campus on monday afternoons, on my way to my Human Computer Interaction class. When you catch the bus on a regular basis at a regular time, you’re quite often joined by a few others who have the same schedule.
And so I was joined on Mondays by a beautiful young girl...
Airlines don't understand mums and marketing
There’s something magical about arriving at the airport with all your luggage and just two of your kids for the upcoming 28 hours of travel between countries, and reaching the check-in counter to find out every bag comes in just under the 23kg weight limit. Score.
And there’s something even more special about being handed your boarding passes and passports, turning around and seeing the...

How to create a stir – write about women in startups
I’m writing for the online news site, Examiner.com as the Boulder Startup Examiner.
Why? Am I insane? Don’t I have enough to do?
I felt compelled to do it. Boulder is a wonderful town, with a fantastic tech community of people. It’s a really big community, for a small town. It’s exciting, vibrant and smart. It’s full of incredible people. And they’re all doing their...
Focusing on founders – the Founder Institute
There are numerous seed and incubator programs in operation, all geared towards getting startups on their feet, funded and on their way. Most of these programs have a similar framework. Startups pitch an idea, and the program decides which are the best investments for their time and money. The incubator then works with that handful of startups and focuses on helping them get going over a few weeks...
The Startup Kid
Running a startup isn’t easy on anyone.
The glorious trails of successful entrepreneurs are littered with the scars of broken relationships and bitter resentment of cold dinners and missed birthday parties.
It takes a special kind of relationship to weather the storms of startup life.
At Darling Harbour, Sydney.
It takes a special kind of kid too. A kid who will understand that daddy or mummy...

Why my family loves Boulder
I never dreamed I’d live anywhere other than Sydney, Australia.
When you’ve got a good job, a house you’re constantly doing ‘something’ to, kids, dogs, routine… the last thing you think of is moving. Anywhere. Least of all to a country you’ve never been to before. But then I came home from work one day and Jed told me his start-up dreams weren’t done...

Ignite Boulder fun with breastfeeding and media
What a great night we all had at Ignite Boulder! The presenters were all wonderful, well prepared and community vibe was enormous. The ATLAS theatre was packed – you can definitely see why these were some of the hottest tickets in town leading up to the event. This community is incredible. I’m so grateful to have been welcomed into it.
It’s so kind of Glenn Letham to have filmed...

Hiking with Harry
Harry loves to hike through the Rocky Mountains. There are more trails around here than you can poke a … hiking staff at. (Sorry.)
Harry’s decided to do a series of Hiking with Harry videos, which will show everyone a little bit of what new things he’s experiencing in hiking in a completely different environment. This is his first one, where he is seeing his first ever frozen lake....
Flapdoodle's pumpkin diet
Halloween is officially over. The only candy left is the real crud that nobody will eat so I’m about to chuck it out. That’s not bad for an entire month!
The other great thing was the jack-o-lanterns. We had heaps of fun carving them with our US friends and they decorated the outside of the house with their scariness for a while. And the kids even had a jack-o-lantern competition at school...
No, not that 'change of life'
Living here couldn’t be more different than what we’ve been used to. And it’s pretty much all good. It’s a 1 minute walk to the bus stop, and the bus comes every 10 minutes. And this is the view I have while I wait:
We have at least one squirrel in the tree which overhangs our condo’s back patio. Of course there are squirrels everywhere here. But this one is in our tree.
He’s...
